Physical

Program,
KIDZ
FIT4LIFE (KFFL)
is an
initiative
of the Work
of Faith
Community
Development
Corporation
designed to
address
obesity and
other health
risk factors
among
elementary,
middle and
high school
students.
During the
2008-09
program
year, its
second year
of
implementation,
the program
exclusively
served
Delaware
schools and
students.
The program
consists of
several
components,
including
school-based
outreach,
six-week
afterschool
and inschool
enrichment
programs,
and teacher
professional
development.
KFFL
afterschool
and
in-school
six-week
programs
served 507
students at
eleven
program
sites during
the 2007-08
program
year. KFFL
one-time
outreach
programs
served 1,451
students.
Partnerships
were formed
with schools
and Boys &
Girls Clubs
in order to
serve a
greater
number of
students,
enroll
students
most at risk
of obesity,
and serve
schools
experiencing
gaps in
their
ability to
meet state
physical
education
standards.
Data
collection
instruments
consisted
mainly of
written
surveys,
strength
assessments,
height/weight/BMI,
and written
pre- and
posttests on
curriculum
content.
The
evaluation
found that
KFFL was
associated
with
positive
outcomes for
most
participants.
With respect
to knowledge
regarding
best
practices in
nutrition,
content
knowledge
assessment
scores
increased
for 45% to
63% of
six-week
program
participants,
depending on
the content
area. With
respect to
attitudes
regarding
physical
fitness, 56%
of students
reported
that
exercise had
become more
important to
them over
the course
of the
program.
During the
course of
KFFL,
students’
behaviors
associated
with
physical
fitness also
increased
dramatically.
The
percentage
of students
meeting
national
standards
for the
weekly
amount of
moderate to
rigorous
activity
increased
from 28% to
98% for
elementary
students and
from 32% to
86% for
middle and
high school
students.
Participation
in KFFL was
correlated
with greater
strength and
endurance
for the
majority of
students.
With
respect to
youth health
factors,
content
knowledge
increased
during the
course of
the
program.
From the
pre-tests to
the
post-tests,
scores
increased
for 39% of
participants
following
the anger
management/conflict
resolution
lesson and
for 67% of
participants
following
the smoking
lesson. On
the
post-participation
survey, most
students
increased in
the
significance
they
ascribed to
not using
drugs and
not smoking.
33% of
students
also
reported
decreases in
their
involvement
in
conflicts.
Among
students at
outreach
sites, 84%
indicated
that Kidz
Fit4Life was
“Great!
Really made
me want to
eat right
and
exercise.”
or “Good. I
thought it
was fun.”
100% of
adult
observers
agreed or
strongly
agreed that
the program
supports
existing
curriculum,
motivates
students to
be
healthier,
deepens
understanding
of fitness,
and engages
students
interactively.
In addition,
100% of KFFL
professional
development
participants
gave the
sessions the
highest
possible
ratings for
educational
merit and
overall
quality.
